Adyen test CVV: short answer

A CVV in the Adyen test environment is not a real card value. It is a placeholder digit string the test backend accepts so a payment request passes format validation. Adyen's test card page lists the card numbers. For most of those cards the CVC field accepts any 3-digit value. American Express test cards use 4 digits.

Test CVV values work in test mode. They fail in live mode. A live authorization checks the CVV against data held by the issuer.

Why the test CVV accepts any number

Adyen's test environment simulates an acquirer. It does not connect to Visa, Mastercard, or an issuer. Validation covers length and character set: 3 digits for Visa and Mastercard, 4 digits for Amex. No issuer gets queried, so any digit string with the right length returns an authorised result unless the test card is set to return a refusal.

Where the numbers live

Adyen publishes test card numbers in its documentation. The list covers Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, Diners, and JCB, plus regional cards for Brazil, Mexico, and other markets. Each entry shows the number, expiry, and CVC rule. Adyen also lists cards that force set results, such as a CVC mismatch refusal, so you can test error handling without guessing.

  • Visa test number: 4111 1111 1111 1111
  • Mastercard test number: 5555 4444 3333 1111
  • Amex test number: 3700 0000 0000 002

Confirm the current list before you build against it. Adyen has retired test card numbers in the past.

Test environment setup

Test calls go to an endpoint separate from live calls. Adyen issues a test API key in the Customer Area under Developers, then API credentials. Requests that pair a live key with test card numbers get rejected. Use the test key with test card data.

Simulating a CVV refusal

Adyen ties refusal behavior to specific test card numbers, not to specific CVV digits. To test a CVC decline path, use the test card Adyen documents for that result. Some test cards trigger a refusal when the amount matches a set figure. Read the refusal reason code in the response and map it in your own error handling.

Limits

Test CVV values carry no value outside the test environment. Real card data must not enter a test environment. Card network rules and PCI DSS require live account data to stay in a compliant live environment. If you need real CVV behavior, run a live transaction with a real card under a compliant setup, not in test.
